the battery

The Battery was built in 1869, to augment the Old Light and provide warning to shipping in adverse weather conditions, and was finally decommissioned in 1897 once the North and South Lights were in use. When the Island became shrouded in fog, then rockets, later the guns, were discharged at 10 minute intervals by the resident watchmen. For such a short term fix, this has left the island with one of the most beautiful locations. Along with the Old Light, this spot is much favoured for watching the setting sun. When the weather switches to the East, it can be surprisingly warm in this sheltered spot, absolutely lost in watching the crashing waves and the birds busying themselves along the west sidelands.
